Abstract

Background and Objective: Child maltreatment is a widespread public health problem with adverse short-term and long-term physical and mental health consequences for children. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mediating role of psychological resilience between childhood trauma and non-suicidal self-harm behaviors in adolescents.
Method: The method of the present study was correlational path analysis. The statistical population of the present study was all students studying in the second level of secondary education in Bam in the academic year 1403-1404, which was selected using cluster sampling method according to the statistical population with a minimum sample size of 330 people. The instruments used were the Resilience Scale (Connor and Davidson, 2003), the Self-Injurious Behaviors and Functions Questionnaire (Khanipour, 2014), and the short form of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (1998). Pearson correlation coefficient and path analysis were used to analyze the data..
Findings: It showed that childhood trauma had a direct effect on non-suicidal self-harm behaviors (P<0.05). Childhood trauma had significant indirect predictive effects on non-suicidal self-harm behaviors through psychological resilience (β=0.157, P<0.001).
Conclusion Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that adolescents with childhood trauma can engage in less self-harming behaviors if they acquire a high capacity for psychological resilience.
